Protoculture Addicts (1-20-08)

Are you ready? This one's a long one. (And this isn't even all of them -- I'll post up the rest tomorrow.) As a fan, I must say, it's nice to see so much online activity... ~EhC

United Earth Group, "My Fan Art," 13 January 2008:

RDF Underground, "Episode 229 'Goodbyes and Hellos,'" 14 January 2008:
Hello to updates, new sites, and new info, goodbye to a favorite mag, and a tv network. [...]

Disciples of Zor, "Working on Compilation of Protoculture Addicts articles for Robotech RPG." 15 January 2008:
Basara 549: I scanned these in years ago, and made substantial alterations to them. I'll be putting together a PDF of these files (my heavily altered ones, and a select few of the others with minor alteration as an extra) in the next couple weeks. However, I need help with one article - ironically it's one I created myself as a continuation of one from the collection - The random hit location tables. In addition to the 3 articles (compiled into one) from PA, I also did random hit locations for most of the other mecha that were not in the magazine or RPG Book Two - EXCEPT.... I never got around to doing the charts for my ABP-Z4, the new mecha Breaux added to the second edition of Return of the Masters, or the mecha from "Lancer's Rockers" While I'll attempt to do these myself, if anyone wants to volunteer to create some of these, it would be appreciated. [...]

Palladium Books, "Robotech on Space," 15 January 2008:
[...] Esckey: After watching this on space, I've decided that it would be in humanity's best interest for Robotech to be redone from start to finnish. Fix the bad dialogue, and new animation would rock [...]

RDF Underground, "Episode 230 'Final Battle on Praxis and Journey to Garuda,'" 15 January 2008:
The Sentinels are triumphant on Praxis and prepare to journey to Garuda while trouble is brewing on the moon of Fantoma. [...]

RDF Underground, "Live Action TV Series?" 15 January 2008:
[...] Fremen72: I think a good TV series could be possible if they go with a new story rather than retell the original. I would like to see a prequel. Maybe the unification wars. That would be a good place to start. Introduce some new characters and go to a part of the Robotech universe that hasn't been explored (aside from comics) in too much detail.

Robotech.com, "Wow," 15 January 2008:
[...] atreyu2112: I'll chip in... I have to agree that Robotech.com is poorly run. The updates are so few and far in between that I usually find the information elsewhere long before it's posted here. [...] Toynami's web site is even worse. [...]

RDF Underground, "Episode 231 'Death of Praxis,'" 16 January 2008:

Spacecast, "The Macross Saga (Episodes 1-36)," 17 January 2008:
[...] Pepperidge: [...] I must say that the animation in episode 11 was absolutely abysmal. Amazing that so many people criticize the problems with modern digital animation when they were able to get away with entire sequences composed only of keyframes. Regardless, I'm very impressed with Robotech as an adaptation. The script is much more maturely written than I was expecting for a dub from the 80s. [...] TheVok: After seeing episode 20, let me be the first Torontonian to admit to completely forgetting over the years that it was my own city that offered/refused to take in the refugees of Macross City. I'm so proud/ashamed of the Ontario Quadrant! [...]

Concept Den, "Science Fiction Troopers Design 101," 18 January 2008:
During the lifetime of this blog, I’m pretty sure I’ve blabbed about the so-called “Science-Fiction Troopers” phenomena for a while now. Its enduring status throughout the decades reached a fever pitch with (at the time of this writing) the release of videogames based on original properties like Halo, Killzone, Starcraft, Doom, Mass Effect, Armies of the Southern Cross, Gears of War, Quake, Crysis and Unreal, and popular licensed franchises like Starwars (Republic Commando, Dark Troopers), Battletech (Elementals) and Warhammer 40k. [...]

Robotech.com, "Robotech and Race," 18 January 2008:
smiernoff: With all the buzz over a possible live action movie and who should take starring roles, I've read some message boards (on other sites) where it appears some Asian fans seem to take issue with Caucasians taking roles beyond Max Sterling. [...]

Robotech.com, "Five things HG needs to do to help Robotech reach new fans and keep the old fans happy.." 18 January 2008:
JMcle97000: 1. Get Robotech back on TV,here in the States, the Sci-Fi Channel, USA Network, Cartoon Network, one of those channels would be perfect. 2. Make New Robotech Comics!!!! Its been how long since Prelude was ended... 3. Reprint the rest of the Novels and the Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles comics in a TPB, (preferably with some new matrial made by the Waltrips) and hurry up all ready!!!! 4. Spores, Moulds, and Fungus, "Thoughts on Death Note and Robotech," 15 January 2008:
Watching Minmay on Robotech and Misa Amane on Death Note at around the same time puts me in my own special feminist hell. But I find Misa to be much more objectionable, because she isn't a "civilian" character, and is directly compared to two very awesome male characters. Yeah, sure, you can make the argument that Misa is dark and crazy underneath it all, but her attitude seems to come more from vapidity than callousness. [...] Minmay aside, Robotech is starting to grow on me. I don't think I'll want to pick up the series later, and if I did it would be the three series in their original forms, but I'm enjoying the edited version and am getting really curious as to how Macek pulls off the merging. [...] karridian: Nostalgia You know, its been kind of nice this past week to be able to come home, turn on the TV, and watch Robotech. Its been a real blast, feels almost like it was 20 years ago (except I'm coming home from work and not school now). Having the old commercial bumpers really helps feed the sense of nostalgia. [...]

Michael Bradley MySpace Blog, "WHEN THE RAIN BEGINS TO FALL 1984," 16 January 2008:
A lot of you see the title "When the Rain Begins To Fall" in my bio and discography. There's an incredibly long story behind that song. But I just don't have time to write it all down...maybe when I get around to writing my memoirs I'll get into detail, but for now, I'll give you the short version. The song was written by Steve Wittmack (who I had known for years), Peggy March (who I met through Steve) and myself. [...] I'm talking about this song mainly because of the notoriety it brought to me as a songwriter. It led Steve Wittmack and I to a meeting with Thomas White, the music supervisor for a television show called Robotech, which was in the middle of its first season. And the rest is history. [...]

Robotech.com, 8 January 2008, "If the Sentinels were ever completed...":
RaisingCane: I'd make the Sentinels live up to the literal definition of their name and portray them as loyal subjects of the Robotech Empire and charged with its defense following the destruction of the Zentraedi armada and the absence of the Masters themselves. It'd be the Sentinels who the REF encounters in their search for the Masters' homeworld and it is THEY (not the Invid) who serve as the main antagonist during the bulk of the story. [...]

Robotech.com, 9 January 2008m "Nova possible futures?":

Disciples of Zor, 10 January 2008, "I'm Officially Banned From Robotech.com":
[...] Jasonc: [...] From my last conversation with someone at Funimation, and from things posted on the net, Funimation wanted more than to just have HG foolishly spend their money. They wanted to choose the studio, and help direct the movie to some extent. Basically, they wanted part of the creative process. It makes sense. I mean, the movie wasn't put together well at all, even with a decent premise. Well, HG doesn't like giving up control, so with that, the money deal left the table. That was awhile back ago, and I've since had no contact with my anonymous Funimation contact. So, I don't know where that's at. [...]

Protoculture News & Updates, 31 December 2007, "New: eBook Compilation of the first 10 issues!":
This new eBook compiles together the first ten (10) issues of Protoculture Addicts. It covers the early days of the magazine from its creation in Fall 1987 to the end of 1990. That's the period when the magazine was the “Official Robotech fanzine.” It offers 362 pages for only $12.99 US (nearly half the combined cover price!) or $9.99 US if ordered from Protoculture's web site. All those issues have not been available in print for years! They are now made available in a single volume to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the magazine. [...]

Evil Avatar, 9 January 2008, "Robotech back on TV!":
Orz: [...] Man, watching the first couple of episodes brought back memories. It hasn't aged well, but not bad overall compared to less intelligent shows from the era. The voice acting was spotty, stuff happened at a rate far too fastpaced to digest, and Minmei is an atrocity, but I was surprised how watchable it remains. I know it's been out on DVD a while, but there's something different about it being on TV. [...]

Spores, Moulds, and Fungus, 9 January 2008, "Context is Everything":
[...] There are certain concepts I can't wrap my head around, because they jar so much with my established beliefs [...] Another is that Robotech should be granted a "free pass" because though it was a rippingly horrible treatment of anime (3 unrelated series edited into one), it did get people interested in Japanese cartoons and their possibilities, plus was made in a time when no one was interested in foreign animation on television. Still, part of me remains astonished at how Robotech can be perpatuated. [...] I sometimes see the point being made that Robotech still had a sense of power to it that came from breaking a few US TV boundaries for the time while not crossing others. [...]

Anime News Network, 11 January 2008, "Time Warner Invests in Gaia Online Virtual Community":
CEO Craig Sherman of Gaia Interactive, the company that runs the anime-inspired Gaia Online virtual community, has confirmed that his company has secured an undisclosed amount of funding from Time Warner. [...] Recently [...] Warner Brothers has used the community to promote some of its films. Earlier in the year, anime distributor FUNimation Entertainment also partnered with Gaia in a promotional campaign [...]

Why's this of interest? Well, both FUNimation and Warner Brothers have stakes in the "anime" ROBOTECH brand. Honestly, I have no idea what all of this could mean -- if anything at all -- but it's an interesting convergence, if I do say so myself... ~EhC

Vaguely Specific, 5 January 2008, "Mystery Anime Theater 2: Robotech the Movie":
The most infamous of all the movies we’ve done as this film was reportedly booed out of a theater in Dallas back when it was shown in 1988. [...] Of all the movies we’ve done we rate this as the hardest because it was so hard to come up with lines and a lot of it seems forced. [...] As someone who has watched the film multiple times it’s not something I recommend.

Canadian readers take note: starting January 7, Space will start airing Robotech, arguably the series that kicked anime fandom into gear in North America.
